Mahonia japonica - 7.5Litre

Mahonias are fantastically tolerant plants, happily filling almost any space in the garden. Long sprays of attractive yellow buds are followed by bright yellow flowers throughout autumn and winter, providing valuable colour and nectar at a time when very little else is in flower. These are followed by glossy black berries, adding further interest and appeal. Mahonia's common name is Oregon Grape. This is because not only are the flowers edible (although I wouldn't bother, they're not the best bit), the black berries, which are funnily enough rather grape-shaped, can be made into a surprisingly good jam. I certainly wouldn't recommend eating them raw though. They are extremely sharp and really need plenty of sugar and cooking before they become enjoyable! Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ - 2 Litre

Wormwood is a lovely low-growing evergreen shrub (despite many of us thinking of it as an evergreen perennial) with delicate silver foliage and insignificant yellow flowers in summer. Grown primarily for its beautiful silvery leaves, it is excellent for adding contrast to planting schemes. Phillyrea angustifolia - 30/35cm Ball -7.5Litre

We have grown the ever-popular Phillyrea balls for several years now as they are excellent evergreen plants that establish well in gardens and respond brilliantly to clipping as shrubby topiary. They are covered in wonderfully scented flowers from the leaf axils in spring and sometimes are followed by black berries which only add to their garden appeal. Whilst we grow these as balls, they can also be planted alongside one another and quickly grown into a smart evergreen hedge. Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ - 7.5Litre

This is one of the most spectacular exotic plants, with huge deeply lobed leaves that emerge with a soft, slightly fluffy coating. It performs best in partial shade, where the impressive foliage can really take centre stage. In the milder regions of the UK it is often almost evergreen (mostly Cornwall and some the south coast and city centres like London) but most of the UK it is more likely it is to lose its leaves during winter. - Here in Midhurst, ours are diciduous.  In the coldest parts of the UK some winter protection is recommended. We are lovers of evergreen magnolias, and this one is an absolute delight! A compact, dwarfing variety, ‘Vanilla Pearls’ flowers profusely in spring and summer with beautifully scented white blooms and contrasting yellow stamens. Magnolia laevifolia 'Fairy Honey Velvet' - 10Litre

This is a delightful semi-evergreen, upright magnolia with bold green leaves which is inundated with beautiful creamy goblet shaped very scented flowers in spring. - If only I had got around to taking a photo of these in flower this year! They were stunning!  The photo of the more mature plant is of a similar(but not exact) variety in our own garden, it has been in for about 4 years and has really taken to its shady location. Weigela ‘Minor Black’ - 7.5Litre

This attractive shrub has rich black foliage that gradually softens to a deep purple through the season, beautifully complemented by masses of magenta-pink flowers in spring. Cotinus 'Dusky Maiden' - 7.5Litre

This particular variety of Cotinus has an exceptionally bushy habit, staying marginally shorter than some of the other varieties.  C. 'Dusky Maiden' has rounded dark blue-green, wavy edged foliage with a heavy burgundy-purple flush. The wispy flowers which give it the common name 'The Smoke Bush' have a come through in early summer, followed by silver-grey wispy seed heads produced sparsely around the plant. In the Autumn the colourful leaves turn a riot of orange and red before falling.  If planted in a full sun position it really boosts the superb burgundy-purple leaf flush despite being happy in lower light level positions. Aucuba japonica Marmorata - 7.5Litre

This delightful Spotted Laurel is one of the most heavily variegated Aucubas, with beautifully marbled yellow and green leaves. Its naturally rounded habit makes it an excellent choice for brightening even the deepest shade. One added bonus is that this female cultivar will produce glossy red berries, provided there is a male Aucuba growing nearby for pollination. Choisya ternata - 7.5 Litre

This Mexican Mock Orange is a delightfully rounded shrub with glossy, highly fragrant green leaves that provide year-round interest. Magnolia figo ‘Stellar Ruby’ - 7.5 Litre

This magnolia is a good, hardy shrub with evergreen leaves. In late spring, heaps of open highly fragrant red-pink flowers appear all over the plant, followed by a delightful, if slightly lighter, second flush in late summer. While scrolling through social media a while ago, I came across an online garden centre (no, I'm not naming it!) advertising this amazing new magnolia that makes incredible evergreen flowering hedges. It was this one! They weren't wrong either – it really does make an excellent evergreen hedge and looks absolutely fantastic when in flower. Berberis thunbergii f. 'Atropurpurea Nana' - 7.5Litre

This Berberis, much like most Berberis, is a fantastically thorny plant. As beautiful as it is, it is definitely one to approach with care and preferably while wearing gauntlets! I like to plant them in places I don't particularly want people to access. Blog post on traditional house defence plants to follow... A vigorous shrub with arching branches carrying rich red foliage, occasionally mottled with green when young before deepening to plum-red as the season progresses. The flowers are an unassuming yellow in spring, followed by bright red berries in autumn. Note from Hannah: Berberis berries, known as barberries, are extremely popular in Middle Eastern and North African cooking. Whilst this is a particularly spiky variety, the berries are surprisingly easy to collect as they hang beneath the branches. In fact, my small children help me pick ours every year (their little hands are particularly good at avoiding the thorns!) and absolutely love them, finding them far more flavoursome than raisins.
