A fantastic shrub with pretty pink flowers, but it is the colourful foliage that really steals the show. This Hydrangea is the most compact variety we sell. It is excellent for pots, shady courtyards and smaller gardens, giving you all the visual joy of a paniculata Hydrangea—just half the size. 'Little Lime' produces beautiful creamy lime-green flowers that gradually age to soft, gentle pinks, providing months of colour through summer and into autumn. Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ - 7.5Litre

This is one of the most spectacular exotic plants, with huge deeply lobed leaves that emerge with a soft, slightly fluffy coating. It performs best in partial shade, where the impressive foliage can really take centre stage. In the milder regions of the UK it is often almost evergreen (mostly Cornwall and some the south coast and city centres like London) but most of the UK it is more likely it is to lose its leaves during winter. - Here in Midhurst, ours are diciduous.  In the coldest parts of the UK some winter protection is recommended. Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ - 7.5 Litre

An ever-popular and much more colourful alternative to box, with a naturally low-growing rounded shape that rarely needs clipping. Early in the year, 'Tom Thumb' can be wonderfully rich red in colour. This is one of those Hydrangeas that puts on a different show almost every week through the summer. As always, the flowers emerge a fresh lime green before quickly changing in to a crystal white. As the season progresses, the large conical blooms gradually blush pink, giving them the look of an ice cream covered in strawberry sauce! Sadly, I don't have any photos of this variety showing its full colour change because we always seem to sell out before it reaches its spectacular strawberries-and-cream stage! This particular variety of Cotinus has an exceptionally bushy habit, staying marginally shorter than some other varieties.  'Dusky Maiden' has rounded dark blue-green, wavy edged foliage with a rich burgundy-purple flush. The wispy flowers, which give it the common name 'The Smoke Bush', emerge  in early summer, followed by silver-grey wispy seed heads produced sparsely around the plant. In autumn, the foliage transforms into a spectacular display of vibrant oranges and reds before falling. Chaenomeles × superba 'Jet Trail’ - 7.5Litre

This Japanese Quince is a delightful wall shrub that flowers profusely throughout late winter and early spring. Berberis thunbergii f. 'Atropurpurea Nana' - 7.5Litre

This Berberis, much like most Berberis, is a fantastically thorny plant. As beautiful as it is, it is definitely one to approach with care and preferably while wearing gauntlets! I like to plant them in places I don't particularly want people to access. Blog post on traditional house defence plants to follow... A vigorous shrub with arching branches carrying rich red foliage, occasionally mottled with green when young before deepening to plum-red as the season progresses. The flowers are an unassuming yellow in spring, followed by bright red berries in autumn. Note from Hannah: Berberis berries, known as barberries, are extremely popular in Middle Eastern and North African cooking. Whilst this is a particularly spiky variety, the berries are surprisingly easy to collect as they hang beneath the branches. In fact, my small children help me pick ours every year (their little hands are particularly good at avoiding the thorns!) and absolutely love them, finding them far more flavoursome than raisins. Hydrangea paniculata ‘Skyfall’ - 7.5Litre

This Hydrangea is one of the most INCREDIBLE plants and firmly one of our favourite varieties (and we grow A LOTof Hydrangeas!). The flower heads are enormous. They emerge a fresh lime green before gradually changing through creamy white and finally to beautiful dusky pinks as autumn arrives. They're held on exceptionally strong stems too, so they don't flop like some of the other large-flowered varieties. Interestingly, on the nursery they're one of the Hydrangeas that cope with hot, sunny positions the best if we can't fit them all into the shade tunnels. 'Skyfall' has a tall, upright habit and really comes into its own in partial shade, where the huge flower heads seem to glow and brighten darker corners of the garden. It's also just about compact enough to grow in a large container, provided it's kept well watered and fed. Hannah's tip: Either grow it in a pot or in a sunny position—but try to avoid doing both if you want to keep it looking its best for years to come!
