Mahonia japonica - 7.5Litre

Mahonias are fantastically tolerant plants, happily filling almost any space in the garden. Long sprays of attractive yellow buds are followed by bright yellow flowers throughout autumn and winter, providing valuable colour and nectar at a time when very little else is in flower. These are followed by glossy black berries, adding further interest and appeal. Mahonia's common name is Oregon Grape. This is because not only are the flowers edible (although I wouldn't bother, they're not the best bit), the black berries, which are funnily enough rather grape-shaped, can be made into a surprisingly good jam. I certainly wouldn't recommend eating them raw though. They are extremely sharp and really need plenty of sugar and cooking before they become enjoyable! Hydrangea paniculata 'Vanille Fraise’ - 7.5Litre

This is one of those Hydrangeas that puts on a different show almost every week through the summer. As always, the flowers emerge a fresh lime green before quickly changing in to a crystal white. As the season progresses, the large conical blooms gradually blush pink, giving them the look of an ice cream covered in strawberry sauce! Sadly, I don't have any photos of this variety showing its full colour change because we always seem to sell out before it reaches its spectacular strawberries-and-cream stage! Viburnum tinus ‘Gwenllian’ - 7.5 Litre

A lovely medium-sized evergreen shrub with clusters of bold pink-red buds that open into delicate pink flowers from winter through to spring. To be honest, they'll often continue to appear sporadically throughout the rest of the year too, especially if the plant is kept well fed and watered! This Viburnum provides valuable colour during the colder months. It is a reliable and easy-to-grow shrub that brings year-round structure and interest to the garden. Many people grow these in pots as low-maintenance plants. However, have you ever noticed they sometimes develop a black, sooty appearance on their leaves and start to look... well... a bit ill? That's usually because they haven't been kept on top of watering and feeding. Stressed plants are often more susceptible to aphids, and the sticky honeydew they produce encourages the growth of black sooty mould on the leaves. To keep your Viburnum happy, water it regularly when growing in a pot, even during winter if rainfall has been scarce. We also recommend feeding with a good shrub fertiliser (we like Vitax Q4) twice a year (spring and autumn) and occasionally giving it a boost with a liquid seaweed feed containing iron. Aucuba japonica Marmorata - 7.5Litre

This delightful Spotted Laurel is one of the most heavily variegated Aucubas, with beautifully marbled yellow and green leaves. Its naturally rounded habit makes it an excellent choice for brightening even the deepest shade. Myrtus communis subsp. tarentina

This Myrtle is a gorgeous evergreen shrub with glossy, pointed dark green leaves and pretty explosions of fragrant creamy white flowers covering the stems throughout summer. It is an excellent alternative to box, clipping beautifully into balls and other loose topiary shapes. Now I’ve done the basics, let me tell you why I LOVE this Myrtle so much. Myrtle has long been known as the herb of love, with its history stretching all the way back to the Ancient Greeks. Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a sprig of Myrtle before they married, and descendants of that original plant can still be seen growing at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight today. Even before I knew any of this, my mother cut an entire bush of Myrtle from her garden a few days before Mike and I got married. She strung it over the porch of our local church in an arch and was stunning on our wedding day. Luckily it was covered in flowers and smelt absolutely divine. I have a cutting of this in my garden and will pass this on to my children when they get married.  To add to this the berries are also edible! They aren’t the best raw, but they can be used a bit like sloe's to make liqueur, dried and paired with rosemary and garlic for roasted meats (a bit like you would juniper berries) or made in to jam! Hydrangea paniculata ‘Skyfall’ - 7.5Litre

This Hydrangea is one of the most INCREDIBLE plants and firmly one of our favourite varieties (and we grow A LOTof Hydrangeas!). The flower heads are enormous. They emerge a fresh lime green before gradually changing through creamy white and finally to beautiful dusky pinks as autumn arrives. They're held on exceptionally strong stems too, so they don't flop like some of the other large-flowered varieties. Interestingly, on the nursery they're one of the Hydrangeas that cope with hot, sunny positions the best if we can't fit them all into the shade tunnels. 'Skyfall' has a tall, upright habit and really comes into its own in partial shade, where the huge flower heads seem to glow and brighten darker corners of the garden. It's also just about compact enough to grow in a large container, provided it's kept well watered and fed. Hannah's tip: Either grow it in a pot or in a sunny position—but try to avoid doing both if you want to keep it looking its best for years to come!
